Briggs and Stratton is one of the most recognizable brands in the portable generators market.

In fact, it is currently the world’s largest manufacturer of gasoline-powered portable generators. Its generators are extremely popular and consistently receive good ratings from customers.

Apart from portable generators, the company also manufactures and designs many other products such as power tools for on-site projects, pressure washers, lawn mowers etc . This expertise in technology design makes the brand synonymous with high quality and good performance.

One such high-quality generator produced by them is the P3000 generator from their PowerSmart series. This inverter generator is marketed as being extremely efficient, being able to adjust its engine speed to the given load. This also makes it extremely quiet.

With a starting wattage of 3000W and a running wattage of 2600W, this generator is marketed primarily for RVs and small businesses.

It can also find use as a partial home backup for power outages, although its power supply is on the lower side.

Design, Dimensions & Weight

This model has an extremely efficient design. It is very compact, with a height of 21 inches, a length of 26 inches, and a width of just 14 inches. It has a hard plastic exterior, like most inverter generators, inside which the components are efficiently placed.

Its compactness makes it ideal for transport as it can conveniently fit into small spaces for transportation. Furthermore, it has a set of two 8-inch wheels which make it easy to move around.

It also has a low weight of 84 lbs with an empty fuel tank. This is a low weight which enhances the portability of the P3000.

In fact, this model has one of the lowest weights on the market when compared with other high-quality generators in the same power range.

Lighter models exist but they are only marginally lower in terms of weight, with the difference being only a couple of pounds.

This can be ascertained from the following table:

Table: The P3000 has a comparatively low weight

Model Name Weight (Lbs)
WEN 56310i 81
Champion 100302 82
Champion 75531i 83
Briggs & Stratton 30545 P3000 84
Champion 75537i 97
Champion 46596 99
Champion 46597 108
WEN 56352 111

When its fuel tank is filled to its maximum capacity of 1.5 gallons or 5.7 litres of gasoline, it can weigh around 94 lbs, which is still lighter than many inverters on the market.

Power Output / Generation

Briggs and Stratton does not provide too much information about their engine models. For instance, the number of strokes is not specified. However, despite this, they have an extremely rigorous chart provided in the manual for the proper oil to be used.

The oil type you use is dependent on the temperatures through which this model will be operated by you. It also depends on the starting temperature of the next usage. This is why you must consult the chart each time before refilling oil in the engine.

In terms of power output, this model can produce a surge power of 3000W and a running power of 2600W.

This is definitely on the lower side as far as portable generators go and generally cannot be relied on to power an entire house.

That this level of power output is low becomes evident when one compares it to other running wattages produced by generators in the 3000W-4000W power range.

Indeed, if one looks at the following table it becomes clear that the P3000 actually has the lowest running wattage of the models:

Table: This model has the lowest running wattage in its range

Model Name Running Power (W)
Champion 76533 3800
Westinghouse WGen 3600 3600
Champion 46596 3500
WEN 56352 3000
Honda EU3000iS 2800
WEN 56310i 2800
Champion 75537i 2800
Briggs & Stratton 30545 P3000 2600

However, it can be used to power RVs and small businesses. It can also be used as a partial backup in case of a power outage for your house.

Since it is an inverter, it produces a steady supply of power with minimum distortion, making it suitable for powering sensitive electrical equipment.

This model can also be attached in parallel with another unit to increase the available power supply. Thus, those who find its rated capacity too low can look at this option as a possible solution.

Fuel and Noise

This model’s fuel tank has a capacity of 1.5 gallons or 5.7 litres. This means it can run for 10 hours on a quarter load.

The fuel to be used for the P3000 is unleaded gasoline with an ethanol content of less than 10% by volume and an octane rating of 87 or above.

The gasoline must be clean and fresh – stale gasoline should not be used.

The low volume of the P3000’s fuel tank is a slight setback. At just 5.7 litres it is definitely on the lower side as far as models with a comparable power output range are concerned.

If you wish to look at models with a better fuel tank capacity, the following comparison table will be useful:

Table: The fuel tank capacity of the P3000 is slightly low

Model Name Capacity (lts.)
WEN 56310i 7.0
Champion 75537i 6.0
Champion 75531i 6.0
Briggs & Stratton 30545 P3000 5.7

On a full tank of gasoline, this model can produce power continuously for up to 10 hours on a quarter of the maximum load.

In terms of noise level, this generator, like most inverter generators, is very quiet. It has a noise level of 58 dB [/wpsm_highlight]at a distant of 23 feet when it has ¼ of the maximum load.

This model’s noise is also reduced because of the automatic idle feature of the model which reduces the speed of the engine to match the load on the generator.

This noise level means that it is definitely one of the quieter generators available on the market, although it is not ultra-quiet like models produced by Honda.

Furthermore, since the 58 dB rating is only at a quarter load, high noise levels should be expected.

The following table shows how the P3000 compares in terms of noise level with other generators. If noise is a major concern for you then looking at models with lower noise levels or those with similar noise levels but at higher loads, will be useful:

Table: This model has a comparatively low noise level

Model Name Noise (dB)
Honda EU3000iS 47
WEN 56310i 57
Briggs & Stratton 30545 P3000 58
Champion 75537i 58
Champion 75531i 58

This model is, however, not CARB compliant [/wpsm_highlight]and hence does not ship to California as it fails to meet the rigorous emission and design laws of the state.

Display & Control Panel

As stated before, this model has an extremely compact design. This is mirrored in the control panel of this model in which a large number of controls are neatly packed into the panel.

Such a multitude of controls gives you a much better command over your experience with the generator.

The following controls are available on this model’s control panel :

  • POWERSMART switch: Used to turn the POWERSMART mode on which allows the engine to change its speed to suit the load
  • Maintenance cover: gives access to the air cleaner and oil service
  • Recoil start cord
  • Engine switch: turns on both the engine and the fuel valve
  • Circuit breakers: they are 120V, 20 Amp circuit breakers which are ‘push to reset’ type
  • Parallel operation port: used to connect two units of this model in parallel with each other
  • Statstation LCD screen: allows you to monitor the total generator load, the hours the generator has been used for, and gives maintenance warnings
  • Grounding terminal: used to ground the generator – consult local regulations before you do so
  • 5 outlets: one 12V DC receptacle, a USB port, a 120V, 20 Amp duplex, and a 120V, 30 Amp twist-lock receptacle

Startup and Shut down

This model only has a manual recoil start option. Electric and remote starts are not available. To start the generator, first ensure that no loads are plugged into the generator and that it is in an open space with plenty of ventilation.

After this, follow these steps :

  • Turn the engine switch ON
  • Push the choke lever to CHOKE
  • Slowly pull the recoil starter cord until resistance is felt. Then pull it sharply
  • Slowly move the choke lever to RUN position

In case the engine falters during the last step, first move the lever to the half-choke position. Then wait for the engine to run smoothly and then move it to the RUN position.

To turn off the engine, first, disconnect all electrical loads from the generator. Shutting the generator down with loads connected and on can cause damage to it. After this, follow these steps :

  • Let the generator run for a few minutes with no load plugged in to stabilize internal temperature
  • Turn the engine switch to OFF position

Additional Features with Briggs and Stratton P3000

The Briggs and Stratton P3000 has a number of extra technological features which give it an edge over other competitors in the market. These are as follows:

Statstation display: this is an LCD display on the control panel which tells you the load currently attached to the generator, the hours of use of the generator, and a maintenance reminder telling you when to change the oil, air filter, and spark plug – this makes maintenance extremely convenient for this model

POWERSMART mode: this mode can be turned on from the control panel – it lets the engine adjust its speed according to the load attached to the generator, thus increasing fuel efficiency and decreasing noise

Warranty & Repairs

  1. DO not buy the P3000. IF your gasoline is more than 30 days out of the pump, even NON ethanol gasoline with a preservative in it, this generator won’t run on it. Wheras a 12 year old Tecumseh Snow King engine runs perfectly on 6 month old non-ethanol gasoline with a preservative in it.
So, if you want to make a run to the gas station every time the power goes down, buy it. Otherwise, find something else. The Briggs and Stratton Auithorized service station told me this, and my experience verifies it completely!
