Champion 76533 Generator Review (Dual Fuel & RV Ready) is reader-supported. As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.Learn more

The Champion 76533 is a dual-fuel generator, capable of using both propane and gasoline, which can produce a continuous wattage of either 3800W if using gasoline or 3420W if using propane.

The surge wattage varies also with 4750W and 4275W for the fuels respectively.

It can thus run an RV or a trailer with ease – powering air conditioners, fridges, modems, televisions, and even a power tool or two.

Apart from this, due to its high wattage, especially the surge power, it can be used by those looking for a generator to run essential electrical items during a blackout.

This is no surprise since Champion Power Equipment is known for producing quality generators in this power range for RV and house audiences.

Established in 2003, the brand has been consistently producing popular generators of high caliber, now competing with major companies such as Briggs and Stratton and Honda.

Design, Dimensions & Weight

Champion 76533Like many other non-inverter generators Champion makes, the Champion 76533 also doesn’t have its parts encased in a hard plastic container but rather the components are contained within a hardy steel frame.

This enhances its durability and adds to its longevity.

This can make it a heavier bit of equipment, weighing in at 119 lbs with an empty tank. The tank itself has a capacity of 3.4 gallons or 13 liters, which means it can last for 9 hours at a 50% load when filled with gasoline.

This weight is definitely on the higher side, and this model is one of the three heaviest generators out of the ones we have reviewed.

This high weight can cause hindrances to easy transportation. If weight is a significant concern for you, you can look for lighter models in the following table:

Table: This model has a high weightChampion 76533 Weight

In terms of its dimensions, it has a length of 26.3 inches, a width of slightly over two feet at 24.3 inches, and a height of 22.9 inches.

While this is quite sizeable, a mobility kit allows you to attach two 8-inch wheels to it which make it easier to manoeuvre.

Apart from this, it is a well-labeled generator with warning signs displayed prominently on it.

The fact that the components are distributed throughout the frame is taken into account and relevant warnings are placed next to each part.

While Champion itself hasn’t uploaded an official video of this model, there are many user-uploaded versions on YouTube.

You can watch one of them here to get a better idea of what exactly you will be working with if you purchase this model:

Power Output / Generation

This model is powered by a 224cc Champion single cylinder, 4-stroke OHV engine which can produce a variable wattage depending on the fuel used.

You should keep in mind that only a 4-stroke appropriate oil should be used in this engine – Champion itself suggests SAE 10W-30 type oils.

With gasoline, this engine can produce 4750W of surge power and a continuous wattage of 3800W while with propane it delivers 4275W of surge power and 3420W of continuous power.

These are very high wattages in the 3000-4000W range of inverters and make it ideal for a number of users.

This means that with gasoline as the fuel, this model has the highest running power out of the surveyed models.

Even with propane as a fuel, this model has a higher running power than a lot of models, as can be seen here:

Table: This model has the highest running powerChampion 76533 Power

With a tank filled to its 3.4 gallon capacity with gasoline, this engine can be expected to run for 9 hours on a 50% load.

Since propane is attached through a separate cylinder, there are no such statistics for it.

Since it is a dual-fuel generator, users should keep in mind the maximum and running wattage they require while selecting the fuel. This is because both the fuels provide different wattage levels, as has been detailed above.

Fuel and Noise

The Champion 76533 is not just dual-fuel but also CARB compliant, making it a convenient and useful option for a number of users in all states, including California.

The tank has a capacity of 3.4 gallons or 14 liters for gasoline. This gasoline much is unleaded and must contain less than 10% ethanol by volume.

It must also have an octane rating greater than 85, but this is no cause for concern as most commercially available gasoline has a rating of 86 and above.

Comparatively, this tank capacity means that this model falls in the middle of the range of capacities which various models with similar output wattages have.

Yet in absolute terms, this is two liters less than the most voluminous model. If you wish to see a complete comparison, you can consult the following table:

Table: This model has a middling tank capacityChampion 76533 Fuel

The volume of propane, on the other hand, is obviously variable as it is supplied through an approved LPG cylinder into the LPG inlet of the generator via an attached OPD valve.

On a tank full of gasoline, one can expect to get 9 hours of continuous usage out of this model at 50% of the rated load.

Since the volume of propane is variable according to the cylinder used, there are no timeframes for it.

Like with many non-inverter generators, since the components aren’t encased in a single hard plastic covering, noise can become a major irritant.

This model produces a noise level of 68 dB at a distance of 23 feet – the sound level of traffic on a freeway.

This can be jarring, especially if you don’t have enough space to keep the generator sufficiently far away.

In terms of noise, this noise level makes this model one of the loudest models on the market. It is tied with other Champion models for this spot.

It is possible to easily find generators which are quieter than this model and if you wish to do so you can consult the following comparison table for further information:

Display & Control Panel

Champion 76533 control panelThe display, as mentioned earlier, of the Champion 76533 is well-organized, with appropriate warning signs being placed next to the relevant components. Furthermore, because the controls are not all located on one panel, the control panel is free from clutter.

The main control panel itself is yellow, which spotlights it against the black steel frame and makes it highly visible.

The LPG hose connector is located off the main panel but is also in yellow so that it doesn’t blend into the black steel frame.

Unlike other Champion generators, the labelling of the controls is done in a large and legible font, making the controls easy to locate.

The following controls are provided on the panel:

  • Fuel Selector Switch: Used to select the fuel type to be used
  • Ignition Switch: Starts and stops the generator
  • Intelligauge: A digital gauge capable of telling the number of hours the generator has been used for along with the voltage and frequency of the output current
  • Battery Switch: Enables and disables electric start-up
  • LPG hose connector
  • Ground Terminal: Used for grounding of the generator – consult your local regulations before grounding it
  • Circuit Breakers: Protect the generator from overloading
  • 4 Receptacles: All outlets are for AC only – there is a 120V, 30 Amp twist-lock receptacle, a normal 120V, 30
  • Amp Receptacle, and a 120V, 20 Amp duplex

Startup and Shut down

The Champion 76533 has both a manual and an electric start option. Furthermore, the methods differ according to the fuel type being used.

The following procedures are divided according to the fuel type used and with the common instructions for both starting procedures given first followed by the unique steps for each.

Before any starting attempt, ensure that all loads are disconnected from the generator and that it is on a smooth, flat surface with plenty of open space.

Starting with gasoline

  • Rotate the gasoline fuel valve to ON
  • If the engine is cold, move the Choke level to 100% CHOKE position and if it is already warm, move to 75% CHOKE position
  • Press the ignition switch ON
  • Press the battery switch ON

After these steps, depending on whether you wish to do a manual start or an electric start you can follow either of the two sets of steps.

For Electric Start

Press and hold the ignition switch to the START position and wait for the engine to start.

For manual start:

Pull the starter cord slowly until you feel resistance and then pull it sharply. As the engine starts, gradually move the Choke lever to RUN position to avoid over-choking.

Starting with LPG

  • Turn the fuel knob on the LPG cylinder completely open
  • Turn the generator’s LPG fuel valve ON
  • Move the Choke lever to 75% CHOKE position
  • Flip the ignition switch ON
  • Flip the battery switch ON

After these steps, depending on whether you wish to do a manual start or an electric start you can follow either of the two sets of steps.

For Electric start

Press and hold the ignition switch to the START position and wait for the engine to start.

For Manual start

Pull the starter cord slowly until you feel resistance and then pull it sharply. As the engine starts, gradually move the Choke lever to RUN position within 2 to 5 to avoid over-choking.

Shutting down

Before stopping the engine, unplug all electrical loads from the generator and let it run without load for a few minutes so that the internal temperature can stabilize. After this, follow these steps:

  • Depending on the fuel used, turn the gasoline fuel valve to OFF position if using gasoline or turn the LPG cylinder knob to CLOSE position if using LPG/propane
  • Let the engine run for a few minutes until fuel starvation
  • Flip the ignition switch OFF
  • Flip the battery switch OFF

Value for money

Almost all reviews have commended this model for delivering high standards at an economical price, making it a worthwhile and reliable purchase

Easy to use

Some customers have also noted that this model is extremely easy to use, coming with clear instructions in the manual and having a well-labelled control panel and a neatly laid-out design

Long operation period

Many users have stated that this model exceeded their expectations in terms of the quality that it delivered and for how long it lasted – users have used it for multiple trailers, run it throughout the night on LPG, and even used in extreme weather without its quality is in any way hampered

However, they also had a few dislikes:

Loud Noise

Many reviews have criticized this model for its high noise level, which is 68 dB at a distance of 23 feet – this level can easily be disturbing to you unless the generator is kept at a sufficient distance away

Oil Leakages

A handful of users have also complained that their engines have leaked oil very often, which forced them to contact Champion for repairs

By looking at customer reviews and by analyzing the features of this model, a few pros and cons of the Champion 76533 can be listed.

Dual-fuel Generator

This model is a dual-fuel system, capable of running on both gasoline and LPG, making it a convenient option for users who prefer either type of fuel – for gasoline, it has a tank with a capacity of 3.4 gallons which can run for 9 hours on a 50% load and for LPG it comes with its own propane pipe for easy attachment to a cylinder

The intelliguage is a digital gauge installed by Champion on some of its generators – it allows you to track the number of hours the generator has been used for thus allowing you to time maintenance easily – it also tells you the voltage and frequency of the output current

Worth Every Penny

This model has consistently been commended for being a reliable and long-living generator made available at an affordable price point – this makes it a long-lasting and economical purchase

High Output Wattage

This model has a very high output wattage, ranging from 3800 to 3420 watts of continuous power and 4750 to 4275 watts of surge power, which makes it extremely useful not just to RV or trailer users but also to households looking for a generator to power basic electric appliances during blackouts

This is a major issue with this model and has been criticized almost universally by users – with a level of 68 dB at 23 feet, unless you have the space to keep it at a sufficient distance it will quickly become a nuisance – this is especially true for campers, many of whom have said that the noise of this generator ruined their camping experience

Tedious start and shut-down

Because the controls are distributed throughout the generator, rather than being concentrated on the control panel, and the fact that shutting down requires it to run for many minutes to stabilize its temperature and then run till fuel starvation, turning this model on and off can be time-consuming especially for first-time users

Variable output

Since this is not an inverter generator, there is a possibility of fluctuations in the output voltage which is not in the form of a clear sine wave – for this reason, it comes equipped with an intelligauge which tells you the voltage and frequency of the current at any given time
